Zootopia – Judy Hopps (Movie Review)

In a world of anthropomorphic animals, Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) dreams of becoming Zootopia’s first police rabbit. She enrolls in the ZPD, where she’s assigned parking duty on her first day. While there, she’s hustled by a pair of foxes, Nick Wilde and Finnick McHorn. Later, she helps apprehend Duke Weaselton after he robs a flower shop. The ruckus she causes enrages Chief Bogo and earns her a demotion to the lower-level position of Zootopia’s 1st Precinct.

Judy’s coworkers include Officer Snarlov (voiced by Mark Rhino Smith), a polar bear who was once a cadet at the academy, who doubted she would pass his classes until she improved her scores at every training exercise. Officers Higgins and Pennington are also on the force. They are working with the other predators to hunt down the missing mammals in Tundratown. Officers Wolford and McHorn are part of the 1st Precinct too, although they work with the other officers to do undercover work.

In the meantime, Judy is investigating the disappearances of several predators, including Mr. Otterton, whom she suspects was taken to an asylum. She also discovers that a ram named Doug is selling Midnicampum flowers—which have severe, lasting psychotropic effects if ingested—to the mayor and her coworkers. She and Nick infiltrate the facility, finding Doug manufacturing a serum from the flowers to turn predators into savages. The team saves the savages and imprisons Bellwether and Lionheart, but in the process Judy implies that predators’ biology is to blame for their savageness, inciting fear and discrimination against them throughout Zootopia.
