There are many varieties of leopard dressfish but the leopard espadrilles is one of the most popular ones. It can grow up to two meters in length and a single fish can number from fifteen to thirty or forty fishes. It is usually found in warm and deep water areas near coral reefs or swamps. A popular spot for this fish is off the west coast of Venezuela and Brazil. This species likes rocky and coastal areas and it also likes waters with sharp edges as it can easily bite its prey by mistake.
In the past, the fish was largely affected by humans and their fishing techniques because they were very popular for their beautiful color patterns. As more people started fishing for these leopard dress fishes, the water was becoming polluted with too much garbage and chemicals from fishing operations and other places in the area. The resulting effect was that the fish population began to decrease and many were even killed off. But, in recent years, pollution has become less of a problem and as a result, the numbers of the leopard have greatly increased.
The best time to catch this fish is during the daytime when the water is cooler and it tends to lay eggs much earlier than during the night or on a hot day. During daytime, a leopard dressfish will hang out at deeper areas where there are not that many fish in the water. It feeds mainly on baitfish, barracuda, rooster fish and other fish that like to feed on the surface during daytime. Its mouth is smaller than that of other types of fish making it very difficult to eat. The best way to catch a leopard dressfish is to use a wire leader but if you really want to go catching them, then you can use a hook as well.
