It is used to mock people who vote for politicians and policies that later have negative effects on them, or patronize companies that subsequently retrench their employees. It has also been used to refer to people who have voted for or supported controversial subjects, such as books that are banned in certain states because of the content. In addition to its political use, the expression has been used on Reddit’s r/LeopardsAteMyFace, which is dedicated to sharing examples of people who get exactly what they voted for.
