A Leopard is a ferocious fighter that hunts for a living and can pounce on prey with the force of 100 pounds of limbs. Can a Gorilla stand up to such power?
In this high-interest text, students compare these two animals through narrative nonfiction and Fun Facts. They examine the advantages and disadvantages of their speed, strength, size, attack moves, and even weigh in on which animal is the toughest.
This is a great book for any classroom, especially for those learning about animal fights. The author clearly explains that the outcome of such a fight depends on how it is initiated and the circumstances in which it takes place. It also helps readers understand the importance of using strategy in fighting.
For example, if a leopard is ambushing a gorilla it will most likely kill them as they are designed to hunt primates and often leap and bite at their throats (a consistent weakness in these species). However, if a gorilla attacks first it may be able to get the Leopard to flee due to its greater weight and agility.
To test this theory, we analyzed wound patterns on victims that were attacked by leopards and those that were attacked by mountain gorillas. We found that wounded gorilla victims showed fewer puncture wounds than leopard victims, with only occasional long slash marks from claws. Instead, they tended to have tears and large round wounds. This matched the pattern observed when mountain gorillas attacked their own group members, showing that they also caused lacerations on body parts other than their forelimbs and head.
