While commercially produced insect foods are plentiful and inexpensive, many people think that feeding crickets to their leos is best. Crickets are also relatively easy to find and gut load. Many people consider crickets to be the best leopard gecko food. You can purchase crickets in large batches, but make sure that they are no longer than the size of the leopard gecko’s head. Then, simply gut load enough crickets for the day.
In their natural habitat, leopard geckos feed on various kinds of insects and animals. Since their metabolisms are high, they need to eat frequently. While most pet owners don’t intend to overfeed their geckos with fried twinkies, many owners accidentally give them to their geckos as treats. Fried twinkies can become highly addictive and are best given in small amounts. To avoid overfeeding, keep the number of meals to a minimum.
When choosing what kind of insect to feed your leopard gecko, it’s important to remember that storage methods differ greatly between different species. For example, crickets will keep for 8-10 weeks if they are stored properly. Typically, full-grown adult crickets are around an inch long. Adult Leopard Geckos will eat crickets that are this size. But be aware that crickets make a lot of noise. Their sound may disturb the people in the house.
For a varied diet, you can provide crickets or mealworms, which your gecko can eat on a regular basis. Crickets and mealworms are the most common foods for leopard geckos, though you can try other insects that your leopard gecko might prefer. Just make sure that you provide a balanced diet. And make sure to rotate your gecko’s food. The best food is a healthy one.
